Fireworks, Parades, And Insider Tips For A Cape Cod Fourth

You can feel Cape Cod change the minute Fourth of July weekend lands: fuller roads, longer lines, and that moment when a “five-minute drive” turns into a two-hour mistake. We’re Cape Cod natives, and we’re sharing the local playbook for doing the holiday right, starting with the Falmouth Heights fireworks. We talk honest timing, where the bottlenecks happen, why every beach nearby still gets packed, and how to set expectations so you’re not spending the night stuck behind a brake-light parade.

Back in the back in the day, how did you guys celebrate the 4th of July? Falmouth Heights.

It was Falmouth Heights, right? Falmouth Heights.

Everybody. Oh. Yeah, once I was like old enough to ride my bike and go, then yeah. But before that, my parents would never take my parents had nine kids, they're not taking nine kids down to the heights and losing all of us. Right. We'd watch it from our house. We could barely see it over the trees in East Falmouth. And that was that was our five years. That was X. Until you could bike yourself down there. Yeah, and then I was gone.

We lived on uh Mera Vista, so as little little kids, my mom would take us down there, whatever. And then as we got older, we got to kind of walk ourselves or whatever. There was this one 4th of July, our buddy, um, his dad worked at a gas station, and he worked with him for the day, and he forgot to give the money to his dad. So fair to say, we had fireworks, we stopped at every vendor. Yeah, that was unforgettable.

And then now, back in the day of Felm the uh 4th of July fireworks, when I was growing up, Worcester Court was wide open. Yeah, so people just parked everywhere. Yeah, and uh then I'd sit in my house just off of uh Worcester Court there and I'd just watch cars just sit in traffic for hours trying to get up. But but more recently they've now put up um what is it, like marble sidewalks. Sidewalks, yeah. So there's no more parking down the heights, so

Yeah, and for people listening that aren't from Falmouth or don't come to Falmouth, where Lavoie lived growing up on Mare Vista is like a straight road that goes right to the Falmouth Heights where the fireworks go off, and they are the one of the biggest fireworks display in southeastern Massachusetts. And where Mike grew up, same thing, he lived in the heart of the heights. So I mean, these two guys lived the fireworks every single year. Unlike me, who had to watch it over a tree.

Um, so this year, as always, the 4th of July, Falmouth Heights Fireworks. Uh starts at dusk. Um every year they they match it up with I think it's Pixie 103, does music to it?

Yeah, it used to be MVY radio on the vineyard, but now they switch it over to Pixie. Pixie does it and they play music.

Really. And to that point, this this podcast is almost a um like a cliff notes. When you're coming to the Cape, you don't know what's going on. These are insider tips and tricks. And if you're gonna see the fireworks in the heights, yeah, you want to get there early.

Yeah, that's if you'd like to be in the chaos, yeah.

Because I mean a literal five minutes will set you back two hours.

Oh, yeah. And don't plan on getting out of there quickly.

I mean, thousands and thousands and thousands of people there. Yeah.

And and the the one of the best things is that people say, and there's many beaches in Falmouth, and there's uh the heights, and then there's Bristol next to it, and people think that if they go down to other beaches, not the heights itself, they'll be able to sneak out.

No, but every single beach will be packed, especially on that side of the town. You know, you could even go like I when my kids were little, we took them to Green Pond Bridge, which is you know a little farther away. We still get in traffic somehow.

Yeah, I mean, there's only so many ways to get to the heights. Yeah, traffic is uh backed up each direction.

Yeah, I want to do give a shout out to the uh fireworks committee uh who put on these this show every year. They raise all the funds to bring this fireworks display every year, and I mean it's like as soon as this year is over, they start on next year.

Um my friend Susie is the pretty much the chair, and there's only a few, there's only about five or six of them that raise all the money. Last year they had to raise 80,000. This year it was over a hundred. Yeah. All donations, so they hustle and sell shirts, and you know.

And you you had said it's one of the biggest ones in southeastern Mass. Yeah, it might even be bigger than that.

Like, I mean, that's a statement when you think about all the beaches on game. Yeah. That's that's huge.

SPEAKER_03 5:02

Well, the bigger statement is every other town has stopped doing it on the 4th of July. Everyone comes with a Falmouth. Yeah, everyone else is we'll do it, we'll do it June 27th, we'll do it that way. Right, right. We wait, we wait. And I think it's because for years everyone's coming to Falmouth where other places were putting on smaller fireworks displays and people weren't going. What I started doing, because I I grew up in the heights and I seen this every year, the past couple of years of my kids, I would uh we do fireworks chasing where you just drive around town in any neighborhood, and you'll randomly see like you know, uh you go to Old Silver Beach, which is a hidden gem. There's the the folks up in um like New Silver and then uh further north and Catawmet, they'll set off fireworks. You said Old Silver Beach, you can see everything perfectly. There's no crowd. Well, it's not the same show, but it's a little bit something.

The last few years we've been on Washburn Island for usually we stay over this like covering up until past July 4th. I'll tell you what, that's a hidden gem. Because you can sit there, you can watch Mash Bee, or no, New Seabury puts them off. You can see Austerville from there, and then if you do have a boat, or if you want to walk out to the point of Washburn, you can see the Heights ones too. So you get three or four different displays all going on at the same time. Wow. And then you have like little private ones going off, like so is there a lot of people over there on the floor. I mean, during the day, it's during the day it's crazy. Right, right. But like at night, it's only the hardcore people staying over there that the ones who made it survive.

And then another thing, this to move away from Falmouth for a second, Hyannis is doing a laser light drone show on the fourth. I think that's the only other live entertainment. I don't know what it is, but it's for the 250th anniversary or 250th of uh America. I don't I've never seen a drone show.

That sounds very interesting.

I've I haven't seen them in person, I've seen them on TV, and it looks impressive. Like whoever programs all of this, it's crazy.

And then, but those are the only two things that I can Falmouth, which we know well, and then Hyannis, which I I mean, I I myself won't go, but if people are in Hyannis or Yarmouth, that's the only that's what you're gonna do. That's what you have.

And I mean there's X amount of parades during the day. Right, you know, if you just go on, you know, I know they do one in Falmouth, I know Barnstable's doing a parade also, you know, everyone gets all red way and blued up and Yellow America and walk down the street.

And then yeah, uh in a little bit, um, I got a buddy of mine down in P Town who I'm gonna give a shout to because he has a bunch of parades and uh fireworks happening down there. And then for anyone who's coming from off Cape, uh if you're if you're coming here to vacation and you're staying in Harwich and you got a buddy staying in Sandwich and you're like, you want to meet for a drink or a burger? No, it's not gonna happen. Yeah, no.

It's um the the towns on the Cape on the map might look close, but really not not close at all. And then, all right, so I have a list here of the parades happening. Here we go.

Yeah. So basically, any if you're coming down and you're staying anywhere in the Cape on the 4th, you'll have parades in the morning somewhere somewhat close to you. But for fireworks and evening activities, it's Felmouth and uh and Hyannis, the laser light drone show type thing. Um, with that being said, let's take a quick break and let's come back with uh some baseball stuff. Hey guys, we're back here, and I have Aaron, uh, my buddy down in P Town who's gonna give us some Lower Cape Fourth of July festivity news. Aaron, how you doing?

Living the dream. And what's what's happening? I was we were just talking about how we don't get past Hiana's sometimes Mashby, so we have no idea what's going out down there. You guys have a lot of stuff going on this weekend?

SPEAKER_07 10:47

Yeah, I mean, Fourth of July is always huge at the end of the Cape. Uh, you know, there's this magical thing that happens every year where a lot of the towns all host fireworks. So if you have a beach view anywhere near the end of the Cape, you'll be able to see fireworks from multiple locations uh around Provincetown, Well Fleet, Purro. Uh, so it's a really incredible thing to see it happening in so many places at once. Um, but you know, I always like to say the crown jewel, the 4th of July on the Cape, is Provincetow. We have a parade uh every year. We're gonna do this one uh Saturday morning. We have fireworks, so people come from all over the Cape and you know the eastern part of Massachusetts to see the fireworks over the harbor. Um it's incredible. We get to see so many families in red, white, and blue out on the harbor, along the beaches, just watching together with their kids. Uh so you know that's that's what we look forward to every year.

Hey Aaron Falmouth has a parade in fireworks too. So, you know, just saying yeah, great to know.

Um so you know, and Province Town also has an entire week of events. So for people in the LGBTQ community, uh, we have days and themes uh of beach events all across town. Uh so it brings in people from all over the world every single year.

Hey, Aaron, is the um the dancing police officer who everyone knew I don't know his name, but I know he was always out there. He retired, right?

He he did retire, and I'm afraid all the all the young bucks are not out there shaking their heads um the way the way that he used to. So uh, you know, that's one that's one attraction that we've lost in the game.

Yeah, that was, I mean, I'm always whenever I'd go visit P Town, he'd always be out there in the middle of the road. It was it was always a fun time seeing him do that. Um and then how how many people are coming to P Town normally on the Fourth of July weekend, would you say?

SPEAKER_07 12:44

Oh, thousands. Um, you know, we this is a community that has a very small um you know year-round uh group of residents, but we ballooned by tens of thousands of residents uh over the summer. And you know, especially during the 4th of July, and then once more in carnival is when everyone comes together to

just celebrate uh and and just experience the joy and magic that is you know Provincetown.

Aaron, uh if families are coming down, if if couples are coming down, what are a couple of good places to get food down there in between the parade and the fireworks?

SPEAKER_07 13:22

Oh, it's it's hard to find a place that doesn't serve fantastic food in Provincetown. Um, you know, I have to say that uh most families will make a stop at one of the lobster pot locations.

Many of the old places in P Town are gone. But the lobster pot is still going strong all these years later, and still has what I want and need. The essentials.

You know, people who don't get to have lobster very often, they they've got to hit the main tourist spot. But you know, every every single restaurant in Provincetown is fantastic. If you if you like seafood, Ocean 193 is a good spot. Uh we also have uh some incredible uh bar food type food. So uh we have a uh essentially a Brute Works type place, uh which is great, and it's like a sports bar. So uh we've got a Thai food uh location and uh a place called Max, which is also again fantastic seafood. So pretty much anything you're looking for, you can find out here.

I got one more question. You know, the fireworks in East Ham thorough that way from from where you are, can you see even like a slight glimpse of the Boston fireworks?

SPEAKER_07 14:33

You know, uh Boston's on the other side of Provincetown, so you'd have to be on the outer beaches of the dunes. The dunes of Boston. So so hypothetically you could. Um, but yeah, usually we're on the inner side of the of the harbor, so we're seeing all the way back towards the the highness area.

Uh that makes sense. I'm learning something today. Aaron, thank you very much. And um again, there's a parade that morning, fireworks that night, and all week there's activities going on in P Town.

You're the best, Aaron. Thank you. Seems like every single team is playing. Uh Falmouth's at Katuit, Brewster's at Harwich, uh DY is at Hyannis, Wareham at Bourne, and Orleans at Chatham. All the games are 5 o'clock to 6.30. You can check the website, but uh Rich and Lavoie, growing up, did you guys ever go to the Commodore's games or the any of these games?

SPEAKER_10 16:03

I would pop in and out. Um I think it's a good time. Not so much. I mean, I think we're too busy. I know a bunch of us friends, we played our own um Law of Ball down on Toledo Street. You know. Shout out Toledo Street. Yeah, we we played uh our own little stuff. Um But I I I mean I pop in here and there.

I wasn't too big on it, but the one thing, if if people are coming to the Cape, I always recommend going to a game because it's I don't know if it's free, but it's cheap. Like a donate a couple bucks.

Yeah, it's usually donation, and usually I don't donate just because I'm cheap. I have to double donate for you. I figure there's some rich people that will donate in my chaos.

But I I the the numbers, the average of the uh the the players on each team, at least one of those players statistically on average makes the big leagues.

No, you want to know what the it is? What is it? One in six, one in six players.

Yeah, that's way better than my stat. I know. I just made it up. Yeah, did you make up your stat? I know for a fact that a lot more interesting, yeah. And I can just think of like recently, Aaron Judge, um Nomar, Veritac, yeah, Jacoby Ellsbury, the number one pick from last year.

Travis Bazana played for the Commodores last year. He was the number one pick this year. He was a league MVP. Uh come watch baseball. Well, I'm just I'm just saying like it's worth it. It's like like I'm a Cape God baseball league fanatic. I go like as much as we can. We have a spot on the hill where we sit and you know, you have a great view, we bring some food, bring, you know, you can bring everything right in and hang out and just have a good time. You can come for you know a couple innings, you can stay for the whole game. But the level of baseball you're gonna see is unmatched to anywhere in the country because you're getting the best of the best all right here on the Cape, and they're all trying to make a name for themselves. Well, they're here for a few weeks. They're not really here for a long time when you think about it. They're here for maybe end of to ten weeks, end of June to like mid-August.

Because they leave before the road race.

Yeah, and a lot of them come late because they're they're in the college world series or they're trying out for team USA. You also have a lot of them come and then they leave for team USA, and that's what the struggle that the general managers and the presidents of these teams have is just the rotation of the rosters, such a high turnover hits.

You you know, could definitely make that part of the experience, you know what I mean? Because just imagine you're at a Commodore's game, and then next year you're watching the MLB. Oh, I watched him play, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03 18:51

So well, that's my I mean, especially for little kids, because when you go there, those players are extremely cool. They'll yeah, they'll high-five the kids and they're right there. Yeah, then the next thing you know, like whatever was it eight, ten years ago when Judge was playing, you could go in, donate, you could see one of the greatest hitters today playing, you know, right in front of you. Yeah, or you can pay a ton of money, go to Fenway, and not see anything, you know.

It's like but it's just you know, and then they have most places have you know, kids run the bases or autograph night or anything like that where the players are just in the teams also ask the players to be out in the community, they go to events and set up and talk to the they go to the schools, talk to the kids before they're out. There's just so much that they do. And I don't know if you guys well, I was just a nerd, so a baseball nerd. Back in the day when growing up, the players used to have to work too. Like they used to have a job and play baseball.

Now they don't have to, but I I don't remember that, but I do remember growing up. My father always wanted a house of baseball player. Oh yeah. My mother was like, We're not doing that.

SPEAKER_11 19:54

And then when one of the kids from the Commodores made it to the pros, my father would be like, Yep, that could have been well, I know plenty of people that have done it, and they say the relationship is it just goes on forever. Of course. They get invited to their weddings, they get invited to, you know, if they come to the if they make it to the pros or the minors and they're in the area, they put them on the list and they get to go watch them. Right. And there's just always contact with these families because you know, everyone, oh it's just a few weeks, but you're there every day, and you know, these families have to feed them. Oh, yeah. These families have to feed them, and they become, you know, you they're around your kids, they're around everybody in your house, and you know, just the connection these players make are is unbelievable. I do want to give a shout out too. I don't know if you guys know there's uh the New England Collegiate Baseball League, too. And there's a team on the vineyard, the Martha's Vineyard Sharks.

Provincetown Parade Fireworks And Food

It's like basically the same as the Cape League, but they don't get as much notoriety. And who do they play? This is crazy. So the teams they play Newport, Rhode Island, Burlington, Vermont, uh the Bay Sox are out in like Western Mass. So these kids are traveling from the vineyard to Burlington, Vermont. And then they come home every night.

That's crazy.

Uh my cousin houses uh is a host family for one of the sharks. I said sometimes these kids don't get home until four in the morning after a game. They come home every night. The Patriot boat takes them back every night.

So wow. This is another college league. I know there's some there's other college leagues, I think, in like Carolina or something.

SPEAKER_11 21:26

They're they're all over the place. They're in Iowa, uh Wyoming, there's a big one, the Frontier League. They're all over the place. But the Cape League is the best, right? I mean, I'm that's what I thought. It's just the most most known. Yeah, that's a better term. I mean, you can be watching a game on ESPN, and someone there's a good chance that when they announce is gonna be like, oh, this guy played in the Cape and this was his average or whatever. So not uncommon, yeah.

Right. And then um, so I'm I'm looking here just at the the schedule. You have games in Born, Katuit, Hyannis, Harwich, Chatham. So if you go down. the Cape every every area of the Cape on Saturday night has a game going on.

Oh yeah.

So it's not every town, but like if you're in Mashby you can go to it and go to Horn and get down Cape.

Every organization has stepped it up and redone their fields. I've been to every I made it a point to I made I've been to every field on the Cape and stop it. Yeah. Not not one day. But uh my kid used to bat boy for the Commodores. Oh wow so we ended up making our rounds and getting to every every stadium on the Cape that uh the Cape League plays at. This year? No. Last year. Oh overall okay yeah.

And I I had talked to the uh gentleman at the Commodores a month or so ago and I they have um not only are the the players amazing all of the college interns that do the announcing the camera work all that stuff behind the scenes I had said um it'd be awesome if some of those uh media interns hooked up with the players and did kind of like longer form podcasts not this one but I'm saying like they can get really deep into these players and all that stuff. Yeah not for us but another time but any home before take a quick break anywhere you are in the Cape on July 4th there is baseball going on and coming back we're gonna switch it up and we're gonna talk about best places to get seafood all right everyone we're back and everyone who comes to the Cape from from Boston from New York you all come here for the 4th of July and everybody wants to get seafood we're gonna talk about some of the best seafood places on the Cape all over the Cape we can't just keep it in one town we've got to kind of diversify where we're going here but I'll let Rich go first what's the what's your go-to for seafood?

Not that I go there very often but the Mashby Raw bar and Papa Nesset is legendary lobster roll now that was Bobby Weeks's place.

Yes and uh Bobby Weeks for for folks who might not know he he was friends with the Farrelly uh the Farley brothers too and he was in a couple of their movies yeah when I used to work at Woodshole at Shuckers him Murph and Bobby Weeks had a friendly competition whose lobster rolls were were better and yeah I would say that the consensus I don't no offense to Murph but the Rob Bar and Pump Mess it that was like the the giant lobster rolls I did they still have those yeah I mean I can't afford them anymore I couldn't even afford them back when they were $26 and that was like 20 plus years ago.

Now I think they're gonna take out a loan I think they're like $40 now or something.

Oh yeah a lot whether like we're talking baseball or you know all these different events outdoor events whatever the case you never know who you're gonna bump into we went from seafood to dairy queen to the melee tent so I I think that if you go down Yarmouth on 28 that's like what people consider Cape Cod with the the mini golf courses and every other place mini golf seafood and ice cream yes there are uh baton cage out there too yeah there's like a an inflatable bouncy if if you're anywhere in Yarmouth Dennis and you just take 28 bass river coffees you're good we can do a whole section of that but I would say that anyone down there for seafood any place you see on 28 if it's there it's gonna cooks out there is that in mashby they closed they closed I think in Mashby and this isn't seafood related but if you're out in Yarmouth the pancake man I went there last year I went there like three months ago I'm so upset that they took it out of me so upset my brother used to work remember remember back in the day when I was your rain

Yeah that's it it's and then and again again if you're on if you're if you're driving down 28 Dennis Yarmouth and it says it's a mile two destination it's gonna be a little bit a little wild. Yeah it's gonna be a bit traffic is all capital letters yeah it's gonna be heavy don't not expect it the back roads everybody just all of a sudden discovered where those were yeah oh yeah all right we're gonna take a quick break we're gonna come back I have uh there's a big event this weekend in Mashby it's the annual powwow we're gonna talk about that we'll feel better all right everyone we're back here and I know that I discussed the 4th of July fireworks parades all over the Cape baseball uh every year they uh there's a special event in Mashby the the annual Mashby pow this year it starts Friday July 3rd and it goes 10 a.m uh and it ends Sunday July 5th at 4.

So it's a three-day event um I'm gonna throw this over to Lavoy who knows a lot more about this than I do so can you kind of give the listeners uh an overview of the powwow is and the Yeah I'll do my best to share some light um it's a beautiful event one thing I suggest to anybody that I've crossed paths with is to go it's an experience that you won't get anywhere else um unless of course you know you go to maybe another powwow um there's the drumming the regalia um you know it's a it's a ceremony of remembrance it's uh sharing love there's vendors there you're able to you know purchase some native jewelry um you feel the ancestry through the drumming the singing there's contest um there's grass dancing there's fancy dance there's a lot of um it's not what you see on TV it's actually a thousand times better um and this is definitely something that I I think everybody should experience at least once in their life um yeah that's kinda the food is amazing and it's worth the money um but you know overall it's it's experience I think um it's it's you don't want to miss it. I mean it's a three day event you know what I mean grand opening is on Friday um I'm not sure about fireball this year. I don't I think that's at a later date but um you know it's you know the kids are out there dancing and um then you have the elders and then there's a few times where anybody who attends we get you get to get into the circle and you know you can dance or walk around whatever. But again, you know it's it's it's experience um it's uh it's a truthful event that I feel is necessary you know what I mean because T V um can kind of play tricks you know what I mean so I think to get the actual experience is is something you you won't forget.

I got a a couple of things I want to talk about fireball in a minute because it is happening on the 4th at noon. But before that um for for any student in Falmouth public schools um the the Wampanoag tribe comes in quite often and they and they do the um I don't want to they don't do the whole they they do the dance they do the I just did the multicultural Ferret East Falmouth they had the drums. For anyone who's not in the school system they don't get that experience if you're coming from off cape you're not getting that experience.

Your kids aren't getting that in your school and that that's the part where so I am half Wampanoag and you know I remember working on uh Plymouth Plantation now I don't know a lot of the ancestry and heritage that some of my uh elderly cousins do but you know it's if you see it on TV or whatever we've all seen stuff and just believed it you know so some kids come through and they're oh and then my older cousins kind of let them have it respectfully you know like that's a lie. You know what I mean? So there's a lot of um I to go get the actual experience and while you're there you can ask questions you know what I mean like it it is what it is. Um it's I don't know I I'm a I've learned um I mean I'm 46 but now I'm really heavy into um kicking over rocks asking questions and like I know what but listen I was also the guy who also believed Christopher Columbus discovered America going through the Falma school system until I was in almost high school.

So that's if for for anyone down on the Cape, you're on vacation you have young kids it it could be the biggest event like could be the biggest takeaway from the vacation that when they're 46 yeah they're gonna remember that and it's one of the few places that you can experience that the truth you know like you there aren't the motorcycle maybe I'll cut that in post we'll see but all I'm saying is that I think we take for granted that the children in our school systems in Falmouth and Mashby they get to experience this like regularly it becomes part of the truth how they know things. Oh yeah I mean if you're on vacation you get to see a lot of like just proud this is who I am and this is what's not being told this is what's not being seen you have to come to get the experience you know what I mean the one thing I um at the multicultural fair the one thing I learned and I didn't know this and I was that you should not touch another person's drum it's not right it's not a it's not a toy sacred it's safe yes very sacred and once they open up the circle it's part of the circle and don't go so now that is something that I would assume most most people because they see the you see a drum and you start whacking on it don't do that. You could probably get kicked out so that's what you know there's these experiences and then fireball which is happening can you explain what fireball is so I I haven't played in a couple years uh actually no I haven't played in two years.

A hundred percent okay I just want to make sure that was clear for that I mean and the the thing with the ball that's it a metaphorical fire it's a l liter it's both it's both yeah it's about the size of a volleyball okay um it's wrapped in chicken wire you feel every bit of it the longer the ball's burning the harder it gets so you want the ball early get your burns you know I'm not saying you gotta quit after that but like how much it's not about me at that point it's sacrifice you know what I mean it's if I'm playing for whoever like okay I'm really gonna give this we're not out there hurting each other you know what I mean it's um a lot of us crowd the ball at once and someone yell they're gonna pick it up everyone backs off you know what I mean and you'd be surprised um some will run a good 15 feet with it and that thing's cooking that thing's cooking it's it's I I'm this it's you want to talk about exciting and then afterwards to see the the hit in the face some of your skin's burnt off your chest like the the war wounds are amazing to to see you know so at the powwow the the public who is in attendance watches this game no pictures no pictures no but I'm just I just want to make didn't know if it was open to the public or it was private oh yeah so after weeks of all these kids watching world cup soccer where people are going down and you know constantly then you go to a a sport where you have people running around with the ball on fire it's it's a little bit more exciting and yeah because I mean when when are you gonna see it again?
